I want to use .htaccess protection. I have problem using it with your system. What should I do?

Sometimes when you create the .htaccess file manually, there are errors. Therefore we recommend you to to add the first username and password from the Control Panel. After you have added the first username and password, you can normally edit the .htaccess file without any problem.

What's password protection and .htaccess?

The .htaccess file can be placed in one or more of your directories (e.g. /www/yourdomain.com). Among other things, this file can be used to restrict access to other files and web pages.

When a request for a web page has been made, the web server first checks for an .htaccess file. The server begins this check by looking for .htaccess in the root of the current web directory, and continue down the directory tree until it reaches the directory where the requested file resides. Since the placement of the .htaccess file determines when it will be executed, this fact can be used to restrict access to certain subdirectories.

How to set up a password protected area (directory)?

Using the Password Protected Areas service, you can protect your directories against unauthorized access. When a visitor tries to open a protected directory (or a file located inside that directory), a dialogue window will pop up and request a username and password.

To protect a directory, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go to the Password Protected Areas section of the Control Panel.
  2. Fill in the "Username", "Password" and "Retype Password" fields.
In the "Path" field fill in the full path to the directory (for example: /www/yourdomain.com) or use the [...] button to locate it. Once located, check the box in front of it and click the Set selected button.
  3. When the path is set, just click the Enable Protection button.

Once a directory has been secured, you can always edit its password or remove it from the protected directories list.

Note: The Password Protected Areas feature affects only folders, which do not contain a .htaccess file!
